Colors of autumn 94 appreciation3/9/2024 Richardson’s introductory essay is just about as long as Thoreau’s essay – a piece that was originally supposed to be part of a much larger work that Thoreau’s failing health prevented him from writing. Norton edition that I have here before me is 127 pages long in toto. October, or Autumnal Tints is short – really short. Vintage Thoreau indeed – and quite characteristic of the serene philosopher who, when asked by a devoutly religious and Puritan-minded relative, “Have you made your peace with God?”, replied, “I was not aware we had quarreled.” Richardson sets forth the “common view”, from Thoreau’s time and ours, “that autumn is the time of dying and decay, the season of endings”, and reveals the daring, original qualities of Thoreau’s perception of the season: “he idea that death is not annihilation and something to be feared but rather a necessary stage in the continuing cycle of nature, and thus something to be welcomed as much as any other aspect of nature, is vintage Thoreau” (pp. As Thoreau biographer Robert Richardson explains in a helpful foreword appropriately titled “The Last Leaves of Henry Thoreau,” this last work of Thoreau’s is characteristically counterintuitive, original, and contrarian in its thinking. And all of those aspects of Thoreau’s life and work come together quite pleasantly in October, or Autumnal Tints, the last thing Thoreau ever wrote.īy the time Thoreau composed and delivered the 1860 lecture that became October, or Autumnal Tints, he knew how ill he was with the tuberculosis that would take his life within just a couple of years. And yet, beyond that, Thoreau embraced everything about life, including death – even his own death – in a way that harmonized wonderfully with his philosophy. Perhaps Thoreau’s celebration of autumn came about in part because Concord, like every other wooded region of New England, is just so surpassingly beautiful in the autumn. October would not have been a melancholy, grim, death-of-the-year time on the calendar for Henry David Thoreau the great transcendentalist from Concord, Massachusetts, was having none of that nonsense. Thoreau's philosophy of nonviolent resistance influenced the political thoughts and actions of such later figures as Leo Tolstoy, Mohandas K. Haught in 2000 Years of Disbelief.) When Parker Pillsbury sought to talk about religion with Thoreau as he was dying from tuberculosis, Thoreau replied: "One world at a time." In a diary he noted his disapproval of attempts to convert the Algonquins "from their own superstitions to new ones." In a journal he noted dryly that it is appropriate for a church to be the ugliest building in a village, "because it is the one in which human nature stoops to the lowest and is the most disgraced." (Cited by James A. His activist convictions were expressed in the groundbreaking On the Duty of Civil Disobedience (1849). During his sojourn there, Thoreau refused to pay a poll tax in protest of slavery and the Mexican war, for which he was jailed overnight. His two-year experience in a hut in Walden, on land owned by Emerson, resulted in the classic, Walden: Life in the Woods (1854). Becoming a Transcendentalist and good friend of Emerson, Thoreau lived the life of simplicity he advocated in his writings. He graduated from Harvard University in 1837, taught briefly, then turned to writing and lecturing. In 1817, Henry David Thoreau was born in Massachusetts. Among his lasting contributions were his writings on natural history and philosophy, where he anticipated the methods and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of modern day environmentalism. Thoreau's books, articles, essays, journals, and poetry total over 20 volumes. Henry David Thoreau (born David Henry Thoreau) was an American author, naturalist, transcendentalist, tax resister, development critic, philosopher, and abolitionist who is best known for Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay, Civil Disobedience, an argument for individual resistance to civil government in moral opposition to an unjust state.

Hollow knight all charms3/9/2024 They can be used as throwing weapons or defensive aids without costing Silk. Tools are special items classed by categories, equipped on a Crest with limited slots. She can also use it alongside her abilities to deal greater damage or as a grappling hook. Not only can she use it to slash or block attacks against enemies, but also to dash forward, stab, and bounce up above them. When the spool is full, the symbol representing the side of the spool left to the health indicator is filled. Striking enemies with the Needle fills the spool by two laces. Thread is consumed when using special abilities, including a form of Focus named Bind. Silk is represented as a spool below the health indicator. Lifeblood Masks, granted by Lifeblood needles, are temporary masks. Health can be regained by the use of the Bind ability consuming a full Silk spool. Health is lost by taking damage, either from enemies or from environmental hazards. Hornet starts the game with 5 Masks and can obtain more. Health is represented as Masks, shown in the upper-left corner of the screen. She then must battle foes and solve mysteries to ascend on a deadly pilgrimage to this kingdom's peak. Hornet is captured by outsider bugs and brought to their kingdom, Pharloom, but she escapes her cage before arriving at their destination. She wields a Needle and thread with deadly prowess. Hornet is the mysterious princess-protector of Hallownest’s ruins, a major character in Hollow Knight and the playable protagonist of Hollow Knight: Silksong. Once a keen knowledge of the map's layout is attained, this Charm is no longer worthwhile. It is recommended to switch to something more combat-oriented when preparing for a boss battle. This Charm is useful for exploration and is good during a first playthrough. Beating him grants the Rivalry achievement. He is quite inept in combat and regularly messes up his jumps. He simply has to be attacked until the fight is over. As a boss, he deals no damage due to his nail being made of shellwood. He then becomes the final boss of the first trial. If saved, he once again complains about the Knight meddling in his supposed heroics. If the Knight saves him both times, he is captured and can be found in the resting area of the Colosseum of Fools, where he brags about his skills and how his capture was part of his plan. Once again the Knight has the choice to either save him or leave him, though this time leaving him does not result in his death. He has forgotten the Knight and introduces himself again.įound stuck in spider webs, presumably having been captured by the beasts of Deepnest. Zote can be found in a corridor leading back to the storerooms of the City of Tears. If he is saved in Greenpath, Zote shows up in Dirtmouth, where he once again talks to the Knight in an arrogant fashion. Hitting his shell here grants the Neglect achievement. If he is not saved before acquiring the Mantis Claw, he dies in this location, with his nail and shell remaining. If saved, he complains that the Knight got in the way between him and his "prey", he introduces himself and boasts about his supposed mighty deeds. He is held in the mandibles of a Vengefly King, and the Knight has the choice to either save him or leave him. He regards the Knight as beneath him and accuses them of constantly getting in his way.įound along the path leading to Greenpath. While he claims to be the strongest warrior in the land, he is found trapped by weak enemies or claiming the glory of another bug's deeds. Unfortunately, because it is made of shellwood, it cannot deal damage. He named his nail "Life Ender" because names supposedly have power. This is ultimately revealed to be a promise of glory for himself. Zote is a traveller from outside Hallownest who came to the Kingdom to fulfill a promise.

Word document table clean formatting3/9/2024 When you create a table that extends beyond a single page, you may want to make sure that the information in a table row doesn't span a page break. How you do the formatting depends on the version of Word you are using. How to Stop a Table Row from Splitting Over Two Pagesĭo you want your table rows to be split between pages? Word allows you to format the table so that rows stay together and don't split. If you need to routinely remove background shading from tables, here's a couple of ways you can make your task easier. When working with tables (particularly those created by others), you can spend a large amount of time getting the formatting the way you want. Getting Rid of Background Color in All Tables You can use the technique introduced in this tip (utilizing fields) to control exactly how you want that number displayed.ĭo you need a quick way to format your tables? Believe it or not, there are several tools you can use from Word's arsenal to make table formatting easier and easier. If you need to format a number so that it appears as currency, it is not as easy to do in Word as it is in Excel. You can easily convert such information to Word's native table structure by using the macro in this tip. When you get a text file from a program other than Word, tabular information may be formatted with nothing but spaces in between columns. Here's a discussion of why this happens and what you can try to do about it. This may not result in the optimum table design, however. Word can adjust the height of individual rows in a table based on the information you put in each row. In Word this is referred to as "distributing" rows, and it is an easy task to do, as discussed in this tip. If you've adjusted the height of your table and the rows within the table, you might want to later return all those rows to a uniform height. There are several ways you can accomplish this task, as described in this tip. You may spend some time getting the color in a portion of a table just right, only to be faced with the task of copying that shading to other cells in the table. It's easy to do using either dialog boxes or toolbars, as described in this tip. When creating a table, you can turn the orientation of the text, within a cell, by ninety degrees in either direction from normal. Need to adjust the space between individual cells in a table? Word gives you a good deal of control over this spacing, as discussed in this tip. As pointed out here, just select the cell and apply the formatting. Individual cells in a table can be aligned any way you desire. Here's a couple of ways you can shorten the table-formatting time you need to spend. When you get a document from another person, you can spend a lot of time formatting their tables, as well. Here's how to align such numbers properly within the table.įormatting tables can be very time consuming. This can be a challenge in some situations, such as if your negative numbers use parentheses around them. When you use a table to present numeric information, you may want to have Word align the numbers in the table. Need to align numbers around their decimal point within a table? It's easy to do by using the three simple steps provided in this tip.Īligning Positive and Negative Whole Numbers in a Column How you go about such adjustments depends on the version of Word you are using. When working with tables, you can adjust the height of individual rows. You can easily add borders to your table cells. Want to add a border diagonally, through the middle of a table cell? It's easy if you follow the formatting steps presented in this tip.

John Mellencamp's band memberstts03/9/2024 He called it “folk music with a rock drum beat.”Ī succession of powerful albums followed, including The Lonesome Jubilee (1987), which soared to the top of the charts, galvanized by gritty songs such as “Paper In Fire”-featuring some of the most burning violin playing ever to be captured on a pop record. He considered himself an American troubadour, as he says in the following, but with folk songs that could be translated into pop-rock songs with the addition of rock instruments. In 1985, painfully aware of the plight of American farmers, he not only founded Farm Aid with Willie Nelson, but he put their dilemma into art and conceived the seminal album Scarecrow. In 1983 came Uh-Huh, which contained huge hits such as “Pink Houses.” By this time he was no longer Johnny Cougar, as he re-embraced his true identity and became John Cougar Mellencamp. The album was called American Fool, and it included two massive hits, “Jack and Diane” and “Hurts So Good,” both of which are discussed in the following interview. He then went out on tour with a host of bands, including KISS and the Kinks.īy 1982, he was writing the record that would put him over the top in terms of authentic popularity. His first hit, which was also a hit for Pat Benatar, was “I Need A Lover.” Following that, he worked with the legendary musician Steve Cropper, who produced Mellencamp’s next album, Nothin’ Matters And What If It Did-which began to prove to the world that this man was more than a pop singer. It did little to introduce Johnny Cougar to the world.īut it all shifted when his next album was released, at which time he started writing his own songs. He was dropped from the label and soon signed with another, which released an album called A Biography. His second album, The Kid Inside, also consisted of covers but was never released. By the next year, he had landed a record deal, but his managers decided they had to mold him into a different form and renamed him “Johnny Cougar.” The album that was released was called Chestnut Street Incident, and it consisted of other people’s songs. In 1975, he moved to New York with the aim of making a living as a musician.

Word font to use to write less3/8/2024 In the 1880s–1890s, "hot lead" typesetting was invented, in which type was cast as it was set, either piece by piece (as in the Monotype technology) or in entire lines of type at one time (as in the Linotype technology). a carrier for holding all the type together). This spacing strip was made from lead because lead was a softer metal than the traditional forged metal type pieces (which was part lead, antimony and tin) and would compress more easily when "locked up" in the printing "chase" (i.e. Line spacing is still often called " leading", because the strips used for line spacing were made of lead (rather than the harder alloy used for other pieces). Some metal type characters required in typesetting, such as dashes, spaces and line-height spacers, were not part of a specific font, but were generic pieces that could be used with any font. The rest of the characters would be provided in quantities appropriate for the distribution of letters in that language. A font when bought new would often be sold as (for example in a Roman alphabet) 12pt 14A 34a, meaning that it would be a size 12- point font containing 14 uppercase "A"s, and 34 lowercase "A"s. Unlike a digital typeface, a metal font would not include a single definition of each character, but commonly used characters (such as vowels and periods) would have more physical type-pieces included. The same distinction is also referred to with the terms majuscule and minuscule. Upper- and lowercase letters get their names because of which case the metal type was located in for manual typesetting: the more distant upper case or the closer lower case. In a manual printing ( letterpress) house the word "font" would refer to a complete set of metal type that would be used to typeset an entire page. Metal type A 1910 letterpress poster, advertising an auction, using a variety of typefaces and fonts The term refers to the process of casting metal type at a type foundry. The word font (traditionally spelled fount in British English, but in any case pronounced / ˈ f ɒ n t/) derives from Middle French fonte " melted a casting". Metal type sorts arranged on a composing stick Etymology In traditional typesetting, the font would be made from metal or wood type: to compose a page may require multiple fonts or even multiple typefaces. In both traditional typesetting and computing, the word "font" refers to the delivery mechanism of the typeface. When used in computers, each style is in a separate digital "font file". The term "font" is correctly applied to any one of these alone but may be seen used loosely to refer to the whole typeface. For instance, the typeface " Bauer Bodoni" (sample shown here) includes fonts " Roman" (or "Regular"), " Bold" and " Italic" each of these exists in a variety of sizes. In the 21st century, with the advent of computer fonts, the terms "font" and "typeface" are often used interchangeably, although the term "typeface" refers to the design of typographical lettering, whereas the term "font" refers to the specific style of a typeface, such as its size and weight. A typeface consists of various fonts that share an overall design. Each font is a matched set of type, with a piece (a " sort") for each glyph. In metal typesetting, a font is a particular size, weight and style of a typeface. See also: Typeface The Bauer Bodoni typeface, with samples of the three of the fonts in the family
